The wax palm as almost no one has seen it.

You ride up by Jeep Willys from Pijao and hike 4.5 km through cloud forest —ferns, mosses, tiny orchids— to a sanctuary of centuries-old wax palms at 2,400 masl: Colombia’s national tree and the tallest palm in the world. This is home to the yellow-eared parrot, an at-risk species that found refuge in these mountains. Along the way you’ll greet the children of Escuela La Palmera, where the work of Fundación Frailejones began. On most days, the only visitors are you.

Up there the silence fills with birds: you take out the binoculars and look for the yellow-eared parrot among the palms. On the way down, a partner farm opens its doors with a hot lunch and time to talk with the people who live on this mountain. The day closes the way everything closes in Quindío: with a cup of freshly brewed coffee, before the Willys takes you back to Pijao.
